What Calgary’s climate does to interior woodwork
Carpentry in this city has to survive conditions that most of Canada does not impose. Winter indoor humidity with forced-air heating routinely falls below 20% relative humidity — drier than many desert climates — and chinooks can move outdoor temperatures 25 degrees in a single day. Wood responds to both by moving, and the joints that were tight in September are the ones that open in February.
That reality drives nearly every technique decision we make. Inside corners on trim are coped rather than mitred, so seasonal shrinkage closes the joint instead of opening it. Outside mitres are glued so the two pieces move as one unit. Panels are allowed to float in their frames rather than being fixed rigidly across their width. Long runs get scarf joints cut at 45 degrees and glued. Material is left in the house to acclimatise before it is cut, rather than being delivered and installed the same day.
None of this is visible in a finished room, and all of it is the difference between work that still looks right after five Calgary winters and work that needs re-caulking every spring. When you compare quotes, these are the details worth asking about — they cost time rather than material, which is exactly why they are the first things dropped from a cheap price.
What to ask any Calgary carpenter before you hire
- Are inside corners coped or mitred?
- Coping takes longer and is what keeps joints closed through a dry winter. A quote priced on mitring everything is a cheaper quote for a reason.
- Will the material acclimatise before installation?
- Wood delivered and installed the same day will move once it reaches the room's actual humidity. A few days of acclimatisation prevents most of it.
- What is the substrate, specifically?
- "Wood" is not an answer. MDF, plywood and solid timber behave very differently in this climate, and each is right in different places.
- How is it being fastened?
- Into framing, or into drywall? The second is faster and is why some built-ins pull away from the wall.
- What does the written quote actually specify?
- Materials by name and grade, construction method, timeline and what is excluded. A number without a specification is an estimate, not a quote.

- Any contractor doing construction work in Calgary must hold a valid City of Calgary business licence, and any contractor with employees must carry WCB coverage in Alberta. You are entitled to ask for both before work starts, along with a certificate of liability insurance — and you should ask, of anyone you are considering, not only us.
