Carpentry Cost in Calgary

Updated 3 min read

The short answer

Carpentry in Calgary is priced either hourly or as a fixed-price project depending on the scope. Finish carpentry rates typically range from $50–$100 per hour. Custom built-ins and cabinetry are quoted as fixed-price projects based on scope, materials and design — usually $2,000–$15,000+ depending on complexity. The best way to get an accurate price is a free measure and written quote.

What drives the cost

Doors and drawers
The single biggest cost variable. Open shelving is substantially cheaper than doored cabinets with soft-close drawers. Every door and drawer adds material, hardware, labour and finishing.
Finish method
Site-painted MDF is the most affordable finish. Shop-sprayed catalysed finishes and stain-grade work cost more but deliver dramatically better durability and appearance.
Material
MDF and birch plywood are the most economical. Rift white oak, walnut and premium hardwoods cost more but are appropriate for stained applications where grain visibility matters.
Height
Cabinetry that stops at standard height (2100mm) is more efficient than floor-to-ceiling work with cornice and scribing. Tall walls add material, labour and complexity.
Integrated services
Wiring, lighting, ventilation and appliance cut-outs add cost because they require coordination with licensed trades and precise fabrication.
Site condition
Square walls and level floors are the easiest to work with. Out-of-square walls require scribing, which adds significant labour. Removing existing trim or cabinetry before starting adds to the scope.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a carpenter cost per hour in Calgary?
Finish carpentry rates in Calgary typically range from $50–$100 per hour depending on the carpenter's experience, the complexity of the work and the type of project. Simple trim work is at the lower end; complex built-ins and custom cabinetry are at the higher end. Most quality carpenters prefer to quote fixed-price projects rather than hourly, because it gives you a guaranteed price.
Why is carpentry so expensive?
Carpentry involves skilled labour, quality materials, precision tools and significant time. A custom built-in that looks simple may take 40–80 hours of design, fabrication and installation. The material cost is only part of the equation — the craftsmanship, finishing and installation are what you are paying for. Cheap carpentry is expensive to fix.
Can I reduce the cost without reducing quality?
Yes — reduce the number of doors and drawers, choose a simpler door style, use painted MDF rather than a premium species, and keep integrated services (lighting, wiring) out of the cabinetry. Those four decisions move the price substantially without touching the construction quality that determines how it ages.
