Where to Spend and Save on Cabinetry

The short answer
Spend on the parts that are structural and permanent — the carcass, the drawer boxes and the hardware. Save on the parts that are cosmetic and changeable — the door style, the species and the decorative handles. You can repaint a door in ten years; you cannot rebuild a failing carcass.

False economies to avoid
- Particleboard carcasses
- Sagging shelves and stripped fastener points within a few years. This is the saving people most regret.
- Stapled drawer boxes
- The component doing the most work every day, built the cheapest way possible.
- Three-quarter extension slides
- The back of every drawer becomes permanently awkward. You notice this daily.
- Wall paint on cabinetry
- Chips within months on anything touched regularly.
- Skipping filling and caulking
- It is what makes separate components read as one object. Without it, good cabinetry looks unfinished.
- MDF near water
- Sink bases, mudroom plinths, laundry. It swells and does not recover.

Frequently asked questions
What is the single worst place to save money?
The carcass. It is invisible once installed, it is the item most often left unspecified in a quote, and it determines whether the cabinetry is still solid in ten years. Everything else on a cabinet can be changed more easily than the box.
Are expensive door styles worth it?
Rarely, from a pure value standpoint. A plain Shaker or slab door on a well-built box outperforms an elaborate door on a poor one, dates more slowly, and can be replaced later if you tire of it. Spend the difference on the box.
How much can I realistically save without compromising quality?
Reducing the number of doors and drawers, choosing a simpler door style, using painted MDF rather than a premium species, and keeping services out of the millwork can move a quote substantially — without touching any of the construction that determines longevity.
