The short answer
Hardware is the part of cabinetry you interact with every single day and the part most often left vague in a quote. The two specifications that matter are the hinge — six-way adjustable concealed hinges let a door be re-aligned years later — and the drawer slide, where full-extension undermount soft-close gives you the whole drawer and a real load rating.

Full extension matters more than it sounds. A three-quarter-extension slide means the back quarter of every drawer is permanently awkward to reach, which is where things go to be forgotten.

What to ask about hardware
- Are the hinges adjustable in all directions?
- Six-way adjustable concealed hinges let a door be aligned precisely on installation and re-aligned years later as the house moves. Non-adjustable hinges make a misaligned door permanent.
- Is soft-close built into the hardware or an add-on?
- Integrated soft-close mechanisms are more reliable than clip-on dampers, which can be knocked off or wear out separately.
- What is the load rating?
- It matters for pantry pull-outs, file drawers and anything holding cookware. A slide rated for a cutlery drawer will not enjoy a drawer full of cast iron.
- What are the drawer boxes made of?
- Hardware is only as good as what it carries. Dovetailed or dowelled solid-wood boxes on good slides outlast stapled panel boxes on the same slides.
- Is there a warranty, and from whom?
- Reputable hardware carries a manufacturer warranty. That is a useful proxy for quality even when the brand name means nothing to you.
- What about push-to-open?
- Handleless push-to-open mechanisms look clean but add a failure point and can be frustrating with wet or full hands. Worth considering carefully rather than defaulting to for the look.

- Is soft-close worth paying for?
- Yes, for two reasons beyond the pleasant feel. It stops doors and drawers being slammed, which is what loosens fixings and wears out joints over time; and it means a household with children is not repeatedly damaging the cabinetry. It is one of the better small upgrades available.
- What is the difference between undermount and side-mount slides?
- Undermount slides sit beneath the drawer box and are invisible when the drawer is open, giving a cleaner look and typically a slightly wider box. Side-mount slides are visible at the sides and generally cost less. Both are available in full-extension, soft-close versions; undermount is the current quality standard.
- Can hardware be upgraded later?
- Handles and knobs, easily. Hinges can often be swapped if the cup bore matches. Drawer slides are much harder to change because the cabinet and drawer box are built to a specific slide’s clearance — which is why specifying good slides at the outset matters more than the other choices.
- Do you use a particular hardware brand?
- We specify hardware to the demands of the application rather than defaulting to one brand for everything — a pantry pull-out and a cutlery drawer have different requirements. The specification is stated in your quote so you know exactly what you are getting.
