Solid Wood vs Veneer

The short answer
Veneer has an undeserved reputation. On any large flat surface — a tall door, a wide panel, an island end — a veneered engineered panel stays flatter and moves less than solid wood, and it lets grain run continuously across several components. Solid wood is necessary where the edge is worked, where the piece takes impact, or where it will be sanded back over decades.
Why veneer often performs better
The instinct that solid must be better comes from furniture history, where "veneered" once meant a thin skin over cheap softwood in cheap goods. In contemporary millwork it usually means the opposite: a carefully selected face over a stable engineered core.
The physics favour it. Solid wood moves across its grain with humidity, and the wider the board the more it moves. A 600mm solid panel in a Calgary winter can shrink enough to open a joint or cup visibly. A veneered panel of the same size barely moves, because the core is dimensionally stable and the veneer is too thin to impose its own movement.
It also allows something solid wood cannot: sequence-matched grain. Veneer leaves cut from the same log can be laid so grain runs continuously across three adjacent doors. Achieving that in solid wood is close to impossible and enormously expensive.

Frequently asked questions
- Can veneer be repaired if it is damaged?
- A real wood veneer of reasonable thickness can be lightly sanded and refinished, and localised damage can be patched by a skilled finisher. It cannot be sanded back repeatedly like solid wood. Printed foil facings cannot be repaired at all.
- Does veneer look cheaper than solid?
- Good veneer looks better than solid on large surfaces, because it stays flat and the grain can be matched across components. What looks cheap is thin foil facing with a repeating printed pattern — which is a different product entirely.
- Should cabinet doors be solid or veneered?
- Commonly both in one door: solid stiles and rails for the frame, where edges are worked and joinery happens, with a veneered or MDF panel in the centre that is free to sit in its groove without moving. That construction has been standard for a very long time because it works.
