The short answer

Outdoor structures in Calgary must be designed for three things: wind (the primary structural load), sun (the primary comfort driver), and freeze-thaw (the primary durability concern). A pergola that works in Vancouver may fail in Calgary because the wind load is different. A gazebo that lasts in Toronto may rot in Calgary because the freeze-thaw cycle is harsher. Plan for the local conditions, not the magazine picture.

Calgary-specific design considerations

Wind load
Calgary experiences sustained winds of 40–60 km/h regularly, with gusts over 100 km/h. Any outdoor structure must be engineered for these loads. A pergola post that is adequate for a calm climate may fail in a Calgary windstorm. Use proper post bases, deep footings and appropriate member sizes.
Sun angle
Calgary's latitude (51°N) creates a high summer sun angle and a low winter sun angle. A pergola with fixed slats can be oriented to provide summer shade while allowing winter sun. The slat spacing and angle should be calculated for the specific latitude and orientation.
Freeze-thaw at connections

Material durability
Cedar is the traditional choice for outdoor structures in Calgary — naturally rot-resistant, UV-resistant, and visually appropriate. Pressure-treated lumber is cheaper but less attractive. Steel and aluminium are durable but require appropriate coatings. Composite is low-maintenance but limited in structural applications.
