The short answer
The right joinery method depends on three things: the load the joint must carry, whether the joint is visible, and the tools available. For cabinet carcasses, dados and screws are the standard. For drawer boxes, dovetails are the benchmark. For furniture frames, mortise-and-tenon is the strongest. There is no single best joint — each has a correct application.

Joinery for cabinet construction
- Dados for shelves
- A dado is a groove cut across the grain that receives the end of a shelf or panel. It provides a mechanical shelf support that does not rely solely on fasteners. In plywood carcasses, a dado 8mm deep at 18mm material thickness is standard.
- Rabbets for back panels
- A rabbet (rebate) is a step-shaped recess cut along the edge of a panel. The back panel sits in the rabbet, which positions it and provides a gluing surface. This is the standard method for cabinet back panels.
- Screws as the primary fastener
- In modern cabinet construction, screws (usually confirmat or cabinet screws) are the primary fastener for carcass assembly. They are faster than dowels, stronger than staples, and can be disassembled if needed.
- Dowels for alignment
- Dowels provide alignment and shear strength in panel-to-panel joints. They are used in addition to glue and sometimes screws. Dowels alone are not strong enough for structural joints in cabinetry.

Joinery for furniture and trim
- Mortise-and-tenon for frames
- The tenon (a projecting tongue) fits into the mortise (a corresponding recess). This is the strongest joint for right-angle connections in furniture frames — table legs to aprons, door frames, face frames. It can be cut by hand or with a router.
- Dovetails for cases
- The interlocking pins and tails create a joint that resists pulling apart in one direction — exactly the force a drawer experiences. Through dovetails are a visible quality marker; half-blind dovetails are used where the joint is concealed by a drawer front.
- Pocket screws for face frames
- Pocket-hole screws join face-frame components quickly and with surprising strength. They are the standard method in North American face-frame cabinet construction. The holes are on the inside face and invisible from the front.
- Biscuits for alignment
- Biscuits (compressed wood ovals) fit in router-cut slots and provide alignment during glue-up. They add minimal structural strength but ensure that panels are flush. Useful for edge-joining boards and aligning large panels.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the strongest wood joint?
- For sheer holding strength, a well-executed mortise-and-tenon with modern wood glue is extremely strong — often stronger than the surrounding wood. For drawers specifically, dovetails are the strongest because they resist the pulling force that drawers experience daily.
- Can I use pocket screws for everything?
- Pocket screws work well for face frames, mitred corners and right-angle connections in cabinetry. They are not appropriate for long-grain-to-long-grain panel glue-ups (use clamps and glue), for drawer boxes (use dovetails), or for any joint where the pocket hole would be visible.
- Do I need special tools for dovetails?
- Hand-cut dovetails require only a saw, a chisel and a marking gauge. Router-cut dovetails use a router with a dovetail bit and a jig. Both methods produce strong joints, but hand-cut dovetails are considered a mark of fine craftsmanship. Machine-cut dovetails are faster and more consistent.
