Design decisions that matter

Height proportion
The classic wainscoting height is one-third of the wall height (30–36" on 8-foot walls). Half-wall height (42–48") is more contemporary. Full-height panelling (floor to ceiling) makes a dramatic statement but dominates smaller rooms. The height should relate to the furniture it sits behind.
Style matching
Wainscoting style should relate to the home's existing architecture. Board and batten suits craftsman and farmhouse styles. Raised panel suits traditional and colonial. Shaker panels suit modern and transitional. Beadboard suits cottage and coastal. Mismatched styles look confused.
Material choice
MDF is the standard for painted wainscoting. It is stable, machines cleanly, and takes paint without grain. Pine is used for rustic applications. Plywood with applied moulding is a mid-range option. PVC or polyurethane is used in wet areas (bathrooms, mudrooms).
Colour relationship
Wainscoting is typically painted a different colour than the wall above it. White is classic. The wainscoting colour should relate to the trim colour in the room for visual consistency. A dark wainscoting with a light wall above is a contemporary approach that works well in dining rooms.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Should I do wainscoting or full wall panelling?
Wainscoting (bottom third to half of the wall) is more versatile and less visually heavy. Full wall panelling makes a stronger statement and is best suited to feature walls, bedrooms or bathrooms. For a first wainscoting project, starting with board and batten at one-third height is the most reliable approach.
Can I install wainscoting over existing drywall?
Yes. Wainscoting is installed directly over finished drywall. The wall surface should be flat and clean. Minor imperfections are hidden by the panelling. Major imperfections (bulges, holes) should be repaired first. Wainscoting does not require removing existing wall material.
How long does wainscoting installation take?
Board and batten in a standard room takes 1–2 days. Beadboard takes 2–3 days. Raised panel takes 3–5 days. These timelines assume the material is pre-cut and ready to install. Custom-milled panels add fabrication time.
