Spring Carpentry Maintenance Checklist for Calgary

The short answer
After five to six months of heated indoor air at 15–25% relative humidity, spring is when winter damage to woodwork becomes visible. The most productive thing a homeowner can do is walk through the house with a tape measure, a level and a flashlight, checking every joint, every door and every piece of trim for movement that occurred during the dry season.
The spring walk-through
Work through each room systematically. Most of these checks take seconds.
- Check every mitred trim joint for visible gaps — baseboard, crown, casing
- Operate every interior door — does it close fully without rubbing?
- Check cabinet doors for alignment — even gaps all around?
- Inspect painted surfaces for hairline cracks at panel joints
- Look at floating shelves for any visible deflection at the wall
- Check fireplace surrounds for gaps between the mantel and the wall
- Inspect wainscoting for loose panels or separating joints
- Look at stair railings for any looseness at the newel or balusters
- Check window casings for gaps at the mitres or against the drywall
- Run your hand along baseboards — any sections pulling away from the wall?

What each sign means
- Gaps at mitred joints
- Seasonal wood movement. If the gap appeared in winter and the joint is closing as humidity rises, it is normal. If the gap persists into summer, the joint may need re-gluing or the trim may need re-fitting.
- Doors that rub or stick
- The door or the frame has moved with humidity changes. Most door alignment issues resolve as humidity rises in spring. If they persist, the hinges may need adjustment or the door may need planing.
- Cabinet doors with uneven gaps
- Hinge alignment has drifted. Most European concealed hinges are three-way adjustable with a screwdriver. This is a five-minute fix per door.
- Paint cracks at panel joints
- The panel moved within its frame. This is seasonal movement, not a defect. Fill with flexible paintable caulk, not rigid wood filler, because the joint will move again next winter.
- Baseboard pulling away from the wall
- Usually a fastening issue, not a movement issue. Re-nail with a finish nailer or re-glue and pin. Check that the wall behind is not bowed.

- Yes. Most modern cabinets use European concealed hinges with three-axis adjustment. A screwdriver and five minutes per door is all that is needed. The adjustment screws are visible on the hinge arm.
