These steps, done before winter arrives, prevent the majority of cracking.
- Seal every face, edge and endApply finish to the top, bottom, back, sides and end grain of every piece. Uneven sealing is the primary cause of cupping and cracking. A shelf finished only on its top face will cup; a shelf finished on all faces will not.
- Target 35% indoor humidityA whole-house humidifier on the furnace is the most effective single step. Holding humidity near 35% reduces the moisture gradient that causes movement. Portable humidifiers work for individual rooms.
- Acclimatise wood before installationLet wood sit in the house for 3–5 days before cutting and installing, so it reaches equilibrium with indoor conditions. Installing wood that is still acclimating guarantees movement after installation.
- Design for movementCoped inside corners instead of mitred. Floating panels in door frames instead of glued. Slotted screw holes for wide boards. Expansion gaps for flooring and wall panelling. These details allow movement without visible defects.
- Use stable materials where movement mattersPlywood shelving instead of solid wood where deflection and movement are both concerns. MDF for painted trim. Solid wood for stained applications where movement can be accommodated.

- If the woodwork is currently unfinished or the finish is worn, yes. A penetrating oil (hardwax oil or tung oil) seals the wood deeply and can be reapplied annually. For previously finished work, a maintenance coat of the existing finish type is sufficient.
- Can cracked wood be repaired?
- Hairline seasonal cracks that close in spring can be filled with flexible paintable caulk. Structural cracks that do not close require professional assessment — they may need reinforcement, replacement of the affected piece, or investigation of the underlying cause.
- Does wood species matter for crack resistance?
- Yes. Ring-porous species (oak, ash) move more than diffuse-porous species (maple, birch). Softwoods (pine, fir) are more prone to checking than hardwoods. For critical applications in Calgary's climate, maple, birch or plywood are the most dimensionally stable choices.
