The mistake in children’s storage is designing for the child they are now. A toddler needs low, open, reachable storage; a teenager needs adult hanging heights and desk space. An adjustable system handles both transitions without a rebuild — and it is barely more expensive than a fixed one.

- Adjustable everything
- Shelf pins, movable hanging rails, modular drawer units. The same carcass serves a five-year-old and a fifteen-year-old with different internals.
- A second, lower rail
- At around 1000mm so a small child can hang their own coat. It moves up or comes out later.
- Open bins at floor level
- Toys get tidied when tidying is easy. A bin a toddler can drag things into beats a drawer they cannot open.
- Closed storage above
- For the things you want out of reach, and for the visual calm of not seeing everything.
- Plan a desk position early
- Even if it is a toy shelf now. Power and light in the right place saves a rewire later.
- Durable finishes
- A catalysed finish, not wall paint. Children’s rooms take contact that adult rooms do not.

- Is it worth building custom storage for a child’s room?
- If it is designed to adapt, yes — one system serves fifteen years rather than three rounds of furniture. If it is designed around a specific age or theme, no; you will be replacing it, and freestanding furniture is cheaper to replace.
- How do I stop toys taking over?
- Make tidying easier than not tidying. Open bins at floor level that a child can drop things into work far better than drawers or lidded boxes. Capacity matters less than accessibility.
- What about safety?
- Anchor everything into studs, use soft-close hardware so fingers are not caught, avoid sharp corners at child height, and keep heavy items low. Built-in storage that is properly fixed is considerably safer than freestanding furniture, which can tip.
