What affects the timeline
- Design phase
- The design phase — measurements, drawings, material selection and approval — typically takes 1–3 weeks. This is the most important phase for accuracy and the one most commonly rushed.
- Fabrication
- Custom cabinetry and built-ins require shop fabrication, which typically takes 2–4 weeks. This is the longest phase and the one most affected by material availability.
- Material delivery
- Stock materials are available immediately. Custom orders (specialty hardware, specific wood species, custom profiles) may have 2–4 week lead times. Ordering early prevents delays.
- Finishing
- Shop-sprayed finishes require drying time between coats. Site-applied finishes require drying time between coats and before use. In Calgary's dry climate, drying is faster but cure time is unchanged.
- Coordination with other trades
- If electrical, plumbing or HVAC work must be completed before or after carpentry, the schedule depends on those trades. Coordination is part of the project management.
- Site condition
- Square walls, level floors and clear work areas speed installation. Out-of-plumb walls, obstructions and site surprises add time.
