The short answer

Calgary's climate is harsh on exterior wood: intense UV in summer, deep freeze in winter, rapid freeze-thaw cycles during chinooks, and very low humidity year-round. Pressure-treated pine handles it well when maintained. Cedar handles it naturally. Composite and PVC handle it best of all. Ipe and other hardwoods perform well but require oiling. The key factor is not the material itself but whether it is properly sealed on all faces and adequately drained.

Calgary-specific considerations

End grain sealing
Every cut end of every board is a moisture entry point. In Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles, unsealed end grain absorbs water, freezes, expands and splits. Sealing cut ends immediately with the same finish used on the face is the single most important maintenance step.
Drainage slope
A deck surface that holds water — even briefly — will degrade faster. A minimum slope of 1% (10mm per metre) away from the house is essential. In Calgary, where meltwater can pool during a chinook, drainage is not optional.
UV fading
Calgary gets over 330 days of sunshine per year. Unstained wood will grey within a single season. Composite will lighten slightly but maintain its base colour. If colour matters, factor in the UV exposure.
Thermal movement
A 40°C temperature swing between a January night and a July afternoon causes measurable expansion and contraction. Gaps between boards must account for this movement. Composite manufacturers specify minimum gap widths for this reason.
Snow load
A flat or low-slope deck accumulates snow. A 300mm snow load on a 4×4 metre deck is roughly 3,600 kg. The structure must be engineered for this. Composite boards are slightly heavier than wood, which affects the dead load calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How long will a cedar deck last in Calgary?
With regular staining and maintenance, 20–25 years. Without maintenance, cedar will grey, develop surface cracks and eventually rot at fastener points. The natural oils that make cedar durable are depleted by UV exposure over time.
Can I use composite decking around a pool or hot tub?
Yes, composite is an excellent choice around water because it does not absorb moisture, resists mould, and does not splinter. Choose a lighter colour to reduce heat absorption. Some composite brands offer enhanced slip-resistance for wet areas.
Is there a maintenance-free decking option?
PVC decking comes closest — it is impervious to moisture, does not absorb UV damage, and requires only annual washing. Composite is nearly maintenance-free. No exterior material is truly zero-maintenance, but both PVC and composite come very close.
