Bedroom Built-in Ideas

Updated 2 min read

The short answer

The highest-value bedroom built-in is almost always a full wardrobe wall, because it replaces freestanding furniture that wastes the space around and above it. The second is bedside integration — floating tables with power that free up floor area and stop the room feeling crowded.

What works in a bedroom

A full wardrobe wall
Floor to ceiling across one wall. Holds far more than a freestanding wardrobe and reads as architecture rather than furniture. Usually the single best use of the budget.
An integrated headboard
Panelled or upholstered millwork behind the bed, often with floating bedsides and integrated lighting. Anchors the room.
Floating bedside tables
Wall-mounted with a drawer and a charging point. Frees floor space and makes cleaning easier.
A window seat with drawers
Bedding and seasonal storage in a recess that is otherwise doing nothing.
A dressing area
Where the room is large enough, a drawer bank and mirror rather than a separate dresser.
Under-bed drawers
A platform base with drawers instead of an open void that collects dust.

Frequently asked questions

Will a full wardrobe wall make a small bedroom feel smaller?
Usually the opposite, if it is on one wall and painted to match. It replaces a freestanding wardrobe that wasted space around and above it, and it leaves the other walls clean. Scattered furniture is what makes a small bedroom feel cluttered.
How deep does a built-in wardrobe need to be?
600mm for hanging — that is set by shoulder width on a hanger and is not negotiable. If you only have 400mm, the answer is shelving and drawers rather than a shallow hanging space that does not work.
Is an integrated headboard worth it?
It is a genuine design feature rather than a storage gain, so it depends on what you want. Combined with floating bedsides and integrated lighting it makes a bedroom feel designed rather than furnished, and it removes two pieces of furniture from the floor.
