Accent Wall Ideas by Room

Updated 2 min read

The short answer

The right treatment depends on the room and, more importantly, on which wall you choose. Treat the wall you see first on entering or the wall that anchors the room’s function — behind the bed, the desk or the vanity. Treating a wall covered by furniture wastes the effect entirely.

Choosing the wall

The wall you see first
Stand in the doorway. Whatever you look at is the wall that matters.
The wall that anchors the function
Behind the bed, the desk, the sofa, the vanity. The treatment reinforces what the room is for.
Not a wall full of doors and windows
The treatment ends up fragmented into small pieces and reads as busy rather than considered.
Not a wall covered by furniture
You will see 20% of the work and pay for 100% of it.
The longest uninterrupted run
In a hallway or dining room, continuity is what makes it look deliberate.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Should the accent wall be a different colour?
Not necessarily, and often it looks better if it is not. Painting the treatment the same colour as the wall makes the effect about light, shadow and texture, which reads as more sophisticated and dates more slowly than a contrasting colour.
Can I have accent walls in several rooms?
Yes, provided they relate to each other. Using the same treatment family and the same palette throughout reads as a coherent house. Four different treatments in four rooms reads as four separate decisions.
What is the cheapest effective accent wall?
Picture-frame moulding applied directly to the painted wall, with the wall itself forming the panel field. Minimal material, straightforward installation, and very effective in hallways, dining rooms and stairwells.
